Make the Most of Your Advising Session

Advising can be the key to graduating as soon as possible. Make sure you’re making the most of your advising session with these tips.

Complete Orientation

If you're just beginning your journey as an online student, our online student orientation offers resources, tips, and instructions specifically for those taking online courses and can be a lifesaver for those new to the environment.

Similar to face-to-face students, online students will find an advising hold placed on their accounts until they’ve completed orientation.

Make Contact with Your Advisor

Make sure you know who your advisor is and how they’ll notify students of available appointments well before advising periods. You can find your advisor’s information in the Academic Profile section of .

Schedule Your Appointment

Check the academic calendar for advising dates and set a calendar reminder to check in with your advisor when advising nears to set a meeting time ahead of “advising season.”

Remember to ask what information will be needed for your appointment so you can make the most of your time with your advisor.

Check for Preferred Classes

Look at the Schedule of Classes through ULink to see what's available for the upcoming semester. On the Registration tab, scroll down to Register for Classes and select Look Up Classes.

Also in Registration, you can use DegreeWorks to see what classes you have left. Based on that plan, make a list of 5-7 courses you’re interested in.

Ask Questions

This isn’t the time to let your reserved side have the driver’s seat.

Whether you’re communicating with your advisor by email, Zoom, or phone, have your questions and concerns ready. Your advisor will help guide your journey, but you’re the conductor here so make sure you know where you want to land.

Register for Classes

Once you’re advised, check under Registration in ULink to find out when you can register for classes. It’s important to act fast to ensure you’re able to sign up for the courses you need to complete your program on time.
